Going solar in Malaysia just became more rewarding. The government Suria Home rebate pays homeowners up to RM3,000 for installing rooftop solar, here is how the scheme works and how to claim it.
If you have been weighing up rooftop solar for your home, 2026 is shaping up to be the year the numbers finally tip in your favour. Alongside the everyday savings on your electricity bill, the government has introduced Suria Home, a cash rebate that puts money straight back into the pockets of Malaysian homeowners who switch to solar. This guide explains what Suria Home is, how much you can claim, and the steps to get the money into your account.
Suria Home is a government cash-back scheme for homeowners who install a rooftop solar system under the national Solar ATAP programme and have it commissioned with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). The structure is simple: you receive RM600 for every 1 kWac of solar capacity installed, up to a ceiling of RM3,000. Reach a 5 kWac system and you qualify for the full RM3,000; anything larger still receives the same RM3,000 maximum.
The rebate is a one-off cash payment, separate from, and on top of, the ongoing savings you get from generating your own electricity. In other words, your monthly TNB bill drops because you are producing power from your own roof, and you also collect a lump-sum rebate for making the switch.
Because the rebate is tied to system size, the figure scales with the solar capacity your roof can support:
A 2 kWac system earns roughly RM1,200. A 3 kWac system, common on a typical terrace house, earns around RM1,800. A 5 kWac system hits the RM3,000 ceiling. Most Malaysian homes install somewhere between 3 and 6 kWac depending on roof space and how much electricity the household uses, so a large share of homeowners can reach, or come close to, the full rebate.
The scheme is aimed squarely at residential homeowners. To qualify you generally need to be a Malaysian citizen holding an individual TNB domestic tariff account (not a business account), have your solar system commissioned with TNB before the scheme deadline, and not have previously claimed an equivalent solar cash rebate. The rebate is limited to one claim per eligible customer.
One reassuring detail: the rebate is paid by TNB directly into the registered customer's own bank account, typically within about a week of verification. A reputable installer designs and fits your system and guides you through the claim, but the cash itself comes from TNB to you, it does not pass through the installer's hands.
1. Free site check. A solar specialist assesses your roof, your typical electricity bill and whether you qualify, then recommends the right system size for your home.
2. Installation and commissioning. Your rooftop system is installed and commissioned with TNB under the Solar ATAP scheme. This is the part that unlocks eligibility.
3. TNB makes contact. Once the scheme's claim window opens, TNB contacts qualifying customers to collect their bank details.
4. Cash lands. After verification, your rebate, up to RM3,000, is deposited into your account, usually within around seven working days.
Government rebate allocations of this kind are typically capped and handed out on a first-come, first-served basis until the budget is exhausted. That means the safe move is to start early rather than wait until the deadline approaches, when the quota may already be running low.
If you would like the rebate explained in plain terms for your specific home, including a free assessment of your roof and an estimate of how much you could claim, Suria Home specialises in exactly this: installing rooftop solar and steering homeowners through the Suria Home rebate claim. Note: rebate amounts, eligibility and deadlines are set by the relevant government agencies and TNB and may change. Always confirm the current scheme details with official sources before committing.
